Responsibilities
- Exhibit a solid understanding of multi-user operating systems, inter-process communication, file system concepts, design of consistent network-wide filesystem layouts, use of performance analysis to tune systems and monitor networks, network and distributed computing environments, principles of routing, network security, and client/server programming.
- Work well with other departments in providing the UNIX services necessary for their work. This includes problem analysis, solution proposal, detailed implementation planning within a controlled testing environment, and cutover with a solid fall-back option.
- Knowledge in current industry trends, specific product solutions, recommendations to management that fit well within the existing environment and position well for future changes.
Qualifications:
Knowledge and experience in many of the following areas is required:
- UNIX operating systems (Solaris, Red Hat), file systems (lvm and zfs), clustering or other high availability means of file sharing (RAID, fibre channel SAN)
- Perl programming and UNIX shell scripting to automate system processes<
- LDAP server and clients, Apache servers, sendmail, subversion, RCS, CVS, wikis, java development environments
- Compiling and configuring open source software
- Network routing and security (NIS, DNS, OpenSSL/SSH, ACLs, certificates, vulnerability scanning, intrusion detection, vpns and firewalls)
- Relational databases (Ingres, SQL, Oracle, Postgres) both use and installation
- Hardware installation, troubleshooting, configuration; experience with kickstart and jumpstart
This position requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or equivalent). 2 years related experience is desirable and a proven ability to acquire new technical knowledge and skill is necessary. Programming background, understanding of publishing on the internet, and familiarity with technical publishing are a plus.
