PROVIDENCE, RIóMichael Hopkins, a mathematician at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, has won the 2001 Oswald Veblen Prize. Presented
by the American Mathematical Society, the Veblen Prize is one of the most
prestigious awards recognizing outstanding research in geometry.
The prize will be awarded today at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in New
Orleans.
Professor Hopkins is being honored for his work in homotopy theory.
The prize citation mentions in particular a number of his most influential
papers, which appeared in top mathematics journals.
Founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, the
30,000-member American Mathematical Society fulfills its mission through
programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses,
strengthen mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation
of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and to everyday
life.
