University of Houston to Host International Mathematics MeetingApril 19, 2004 PROVIDENCE, RI--The University of Houston will host the Sixth International Joint Meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Sociedad Matemática Mexicana, May 13-15. Over 400 mathematicians from 38 states and 19 countries will gather at the University to present results of their research. Department of Mathematics participation in the meeting : Ten faculty members in the University’s Department Mathematics are giving talks at the meeting. Those speakers are: Bernhard G. Bodmann, Edward J. Dean, Siemion Fajtlowicz, Martin Golubitsky, Jiwen He, Kresimir Josic, Klaus Kaiser, Tsorng-Whay Pan, Vern I. Paulsen, and Richard Sanders. Three mathematics faculty members are co-authors of talks. Co-authors are: Roland Glowinski (co-author of three talks), Martin Golubitsky, and Manos Papadakis. Seven mathematics department faculty members are organizing sessions on six areas of research. Session organizers are: David D. W. Bao, William E. Fitzgibbon, Roland Glowinski, Kresimir Josic, Klaus Kaiser, Tsorng-Whay Pan, and Manos Papadakis. Yunjiao Wang, a graduate student in mathematics, is also giving a talk at the meeting. Participation in the meeting by university personnel from outside the Department of Mathematics : College of Technology: Marc Garbey is giving a talk at the meeting. Department of Chemistry: Donald J. Kouri is a co-author of a talk. Department of Computer Science: Ioannis Konstantinidis is also a co-author of a talk at the meeting. Also, Ermelinda DeLaVina of the Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Houston-Downtown campus is giving a talk at the meeting. Other highlights of the meeting : Bernd Sturmfels (University of California, Berkeley) will deliver the Erdős Memorial Lecture on Saturday May 15, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. The title of Strumfels' talk is Tropical geometry. Persi W. Diaconis (Stanford University) will give an invited address, A mathematician flips a coin, in which he explains why coin-flipping is not random. That talk will take place Wednesday evening, May 12, from 8:00 to 8:50.
