University of Nebraska-Lincoln to Host Mathematics Meeting

Providence, RI – The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host the 2005 Fall Central Section Meeting of the American Mathematical Society October 21-23. Approximately 500 mathematicians will gather at the University for the meeting, including over 350 speakers from 41 states and 19 countries.

A highlight of the meeting is the first Einstein Public Lecture in Mathematics, sponsored by the Society, to be given by Sir Michael Atiyah. The address is titled, The Nature of Space, and will be given on Friday, October 21 at 4:00 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Mathematics participation in the meeting :

An invited address by Judy L. Walker, LDPC Codes and Their Pseudocodewords, Sunday October 23, 11:40 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Room 115 of Burnett Hall. Walker's address is one of four to take place on Saturday and Sunday, all in Burnett Hall Room 115. Topics of the four addresses are from both pure and applied mathematics.

Seven talks by other faculty in the University’s Department of Mathematics. Those speakers are: Luchezar L. Avramov, Jonathan Cutler, Steven R. Dunbar, Cynthia Farthing, Mikil Foss, Glenn Ledder, and John Lindsay Orr.

Nine mathematics faculty members are co-authors of talks given by others at the meeting (co-authors of more than one talk are indicated with an asterisk): George Avalos, Srikanth B. Iyengar, Jim Lewis, J. David Logan, Irakli Loladze, Allan C. Peterson, Judy L. Walker (*), Roger Wiegand (*), and Sylvia Wiegand (*).

Twenty-four mathematics department faculty members are organizing sessions on 15 areas of research. Those organizers are (organizers of more than one session are indicated with an asterisk): George Avalos, Lars Winther Christensen (*), Jonathan Cutler, Allan P. Donsig, Lynn H. Erbe, Mikil Foss, Brian Harbourne, Susan M. Hermiller, Srikanth B. Iyengar (*), Jim Lewis, David Logan, John C. Meakin, Allan C. Peterson, Gregory Grant Piepmeyer, David R. Pitts, Andrew J. Radcliffe, Petronela Radu, Mohammad A. Rammaha, Richard L. Rebarber (*), Judy L. Walker, Mark Edward Walker, Roger Wiegand (*), Sylvia Wiegand (*), and Gordon S. Woodward.

Graduate student participation: Melissa Luckas and Steven Spriggs are presenting talks at the meeting; Heidi Feller and Joan Lubben are co-authors of talks.

Undergraduate participation: Jonas Azzam, Derek Boeckner, Leanne Hicks and Theang Ho are speaking at the meeting; Azzam is also a co-author of another paper.

In addition, 15 people who received their Ph.D.s in mathematics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are participating in the meeting. Speakers are: Elvan Akin-Bohner, Meral Arnavut, Rich Avery, Nicholas Baeth, Michelle Homp, Robert Jajcay, David Jorgensen, Ryan Karr, Robert Krueger, Graham Leuschke, and Kristin Pfabe. Douglas Anderson is a co-author. Cheryl Olsen, Zsuzsanna Szaniszlo, and William Wolesensky are session organizers.

Participation in the meeting by university personnel from outside the Department of Mathematics :
