Employment CenterOverview of the Employment Center The Mathematical Sciences Employment Center is held each January at the Joint Mathematics Meetings. It serves as a meeting place and information center for ALL employers and job seekers attending the Joint Meetings. The Employment Center is an in-person interviewing program for positions in the mathematical sciences (mostly requiring a PhD). The Employment Center provides tables for employers for interviewing purposes. Interviews are conducted over a period of three and one-half days. Employers sit for hours at a time conducting interviews at their tables in contrast to the applicants who receive interviews with employers by invitation only. Since applicants greatly outnumber the employers usually, they should expect to be busy only part of the time. Many employers at the Employment Center are looking for well-rounded candidates for college and university teaching positions, although there are usually a few nonacademic employers participating. Research-only postdoc positions are typically not found at the Employment Center. The Employment Center is a three and a half day program which takes place during the Meetings. The registration and information exchange is now completely electronic; applicants and employers submit information online, search and sort the information found, and can actually make interview arrangements on a special scheduling chart. While applicants can express interest in a position, and set up available times on the schedule, only employers can set up an interview. Please note: It is especially important for applicants to submit their materials early, providing as much information about their abilities as possible. Also, applicants should indicate in all correspondence with employers in the Fall that they will be available at the Joint Meetings. Some universities interview candidates at the Meetings in locations away from the Employment Center program. Registration information and instructions can be found from the main Employment Center page after September 1 each year. The Mathematical Sciences Employment Center is sponsored by the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics; it is managed by members of the AMS staff with the general guidance of the AMS-MAA-SIAM Committee on Employment Opportunities.
