For more than 60 years, since Volume 1, Number 1 appeared in January
1940, MR has published monthly issues of peer reviews of the world's current
mathematical research literature. Its mission
has remained essentially unchanged. Although today's issues are in essentially
the same format as the first, 32-page, issue, they have grown in size
approximately 25-fold. The cumulative total of reviews is now almost 1.5
million.
Since 1980, current MR data has been maintained internally in electronic
format in the MR Database. The back file of bibliographic data and reviews
for the first 40 years of MR has been added to the MR Database in several
stages, culminating in the addition of the final set of reviews (those
from 1940--1969) in 1999. In addition to the familiar orange print publication,
which continues to this day, the MR Database has been available in various
electronic formats for almost 20 years. In particular, the entire collection
of MR data from 1940 to the present is now available in TeX, in fully
searchable format, on MathSciNet.
Other paper and electronic products
generated from (parts of) the MR Database are designed to meet specific
interests of the user.
The editors of MR, on behalf of the mathematical community, acknowledge
with gratitude the enormous volunteer contributions from research mathematicians
around the world who have provided reviews over the last 60 years.
